What’s The Root Cause of Money Issues?
By Paul Bauer on Jun 20, 2009 in The "Not Enough Effect"
I‘d like to share a story with you…
It’s about a man named Jeff who asked me for help with
some major money issues.

He told me he tried all sorts of things to make more money:
Affirmations
Visualizing
Courses on the Law Of Attraction (he told me he
spent hundreds of dollars just on LOA materials)
Subliminals
As I began working with him, I remembered back to when I
had the same kind of challenges and what I learned. And how
much I struggled with trying to get ahead (or in many cases
just to keep up).
The Shadow Of Money
Jeff told me had problems with money and
feelings of “Not Enough” for as long as he could
remember. Even when he had money flowing in – their was something that seemed
to be nagging away at him on the inside. (like a
shadow that follows you everywhere).
As I worked with him, I asked him why he
would still be hanging on to his money issues – well into his forties.
Jeff stopped and said “I’m not sure what you mean – I’m not
“hanging on” to them – I want to be free of them!”
I replied: “We only do what serves us in some way. If it’s an issue that causes us pain or suffering, we need it to help us learn something”.
The phone went silent for a moment…
Jeff replied: “Whoa – you mean…”
“…you mean that a part of me is holding on to this issue because I need to pay attention to it in some way?”
“You bet” I replied… “That’s how the subconscious works. It’s your faithful servant. It’s doing what it was programmed to do a long time ago. Now you’re beginning to become aware of that programming.”
“Wow’” Jeff said… He took a deep breath and said: “Holy &%#$ !
You mean all the pain I’ve gone through isn’t even about money then?”
“Nope” I replied – “You’re beginning to peel away the false
conditioning that you bought into at a very early age – and it created
an identity – in other words bwho you believed yourself to be
because of that conditioning.
Carrying that identity around with you is like stepping on the break
and the accelerator at the same time when you’re trying to move
forward – you won’t get very far will you..?
“And you end of burning huge amounts of energy – right?”
“Yes” – until you let go… : – )
“But I would have never chosen to have this kind of suffering”
- Jeff said.
“Hmmm – if you didn’t then who did choose it? At the Soul level, each of us comes here to experience a journey of highs AND lows. No one else chose that journey for us. The belief that someone did is called a victim mentality.”
“But why would a person choose to continue that suffering?”
“First, it’s important to understand that the choice is un-conscious.
In other words, we’re not aware that we’re even making it. When
we have trauma in our lives, we somehow have to deal with it.
At the time the trauma first occurred, a part of our own Self literally
became disconnected in order to prevent us from ever feeling that
pain ever again.
There are parts of you that are much smarter (and faster) than
your conscious mind and these parts take on the trauma so you
don’t have to.”
“And that’s where the problem begins?” – Jeff said.
“Exactly – once that part of you takes on the trauma to prevent
you from being hurt again, it puts up a wall between you and ANY
experience that it thinks is similar.
“Oh my God” – Jeff said… “ANY similar experience?”
“Yes” – I replied.
“Paul – a HUGE lightbulb just went off for me!. When I was
young, I remember hearing my parents arguing about money. I was just
outside the room where they were arguing. My Dad was angry and
I heard my Mom crying and trying to tell my Dad something.”
“What just came to me was I thought they were arguing about me!
And what just dawned on me was I formed some kind of belief at
that age that age that I was bad – and I thought that money was
the cause!!!”
“I never made that connection before!!!”
“How are you feeling right now” I asked.
“Wow – both tears of joy and of sadness” – this is weird…”
I asked Jeff to take several slow deep breaths and then to notice
how he felt.
“Hmmm – peaceful – wow – this is so cool… I feel a huge shift from
just minutes ago Paul…”
“Cool Jeff – what have you learned so far?”
“That at a very deep level – we are the ones who created our blocks
- and all we need to do is tune in and really listen to how we’re feeling
- the rest will take care of itself”
“Right on brother…” I said.
“What do I need to do to attract stuff now?” Jeff asked.
“What makes you feel you need to attract it” – I replied.
“Because I don’t have it yet…”
“What if you already did? – but that old conditioning is blocking
your awareness of it.
“But what about the Law Of Attraction – don’t I have to attract it?”
“That false premise is what causes tremendous pain in people
of all kinds. And its based on an outdated and false belief
that you’re separate from what you want.
The only separation that exists is within yourself.
Take care of that, and the rest is simple.”
The phone went silent… then Jeff said “Wow – I never knew…”
“All this time, I thought that I had to chase it, coax it, attract it…
Now I know its all a sham. My mind had me believing that
I wasn’t enough – and I projected that out onto my everyday life.”
“I’m just stunned Paul… – this is just awesome…Thank you so much!”
“You’re very welcome” – I replied.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Since that session, Jeff’s money issues have completely cleared.
His company sales have doubled and he feels a peace that he
didn’t know was possible.
“The Money Loop”
If you’re having money challenges, ask yourself this question:
“How does it serve me to hold on to money issues?”
Your first response may be like Jeff’s. Something like
“I’m not holding on to them! – I want to be free of them!”
But your subconscious knows differently.
And it tries to tell you through how you feel.
So here’s what you can do…
Todays Action Step
Take some time today and really be truthful with yourself – look
into your attachment to your money issues – and the reason why
you’d prefer to hold on to them – rather than be free of them.
Key Point
(The only reason we continue to re-experience a problem is because
we need it to teach us something. When we’re done with the lesson
that our problem is here to teach us, it resolves itself and you’re
free to move on with your life.)
Step 1: Ask yourself “What’s good about my money issues?”
In other words, “How does it serve me to hold on to them?”
Step 2: Ask: “Am I willing to let go of the old identity and the story
that I’ve created about money in my life?”
Step 3: “What would my life be like completely free of this issue?”
And close your eyes, step back and breathe deeply 3-4 times…
Even if a part of you says: “I’ll never be rid of this issue”, just
breathe into that feeling, and thank that part of you…
And in so doing, you’ll begin to free yourself from it.
Allow yourself to really feel your feelings and breathe into them…
For your breath IS your Spirit.
And So it is…
Wow – I loved the audio Paul. I’ve had challenges with money all my life – and I always knew there was something underneath it all.
Thanks for giving me the courage to discover and clear it.
Paul – thank you so much for this latest post, as well as all of them. I believe I’m on the verge of understanding something here that could change my issues around money and everything really. I want to test my understanding. In asking “How does my need to hang on to my money issues versus being free of them serve me?”, are you saying that in the simplest terms, we can simply choose to drop them, like dropping a physical 10lb(more like 800lb) weight around with us? Is that what you’re getting at. And if that is the case, how do we know it’s clear? Simply by acknowledging it? If I choose to say “I no longer feel a need to worry about money ever again, because I already have everything I need” what happens from a universal energy standpoint? Does the universe just start providing because you said so? Am I understanding this correctly?
Your insight is appreciated?
Pat
Hi Pat,
You wrote:
Yes – although if the part of you that’s been holding on to the issue
senses in any way that you’re not in its best interest, it will still hold on.
This is where is gets a little challenging.
>And if that is the case, how do we know it’s clear?
By how you **feel** and what shows up in your life
>If I choose to say “I no longer feel a need to worry about money ever
>again, because I already have everything I need” what happens from
>a universal energy standpoint?
First, the statement “I no longer feel a need to worry about money ever
again, because I already have everything I need” has negative intent
as the focused message to your subconscious.
And as a result, your subconscious KNOWS your true Intent.
Clearing is different for each person. It’s all based on Intent. (Both
conscious and unconscious)
Some people are able to clear just by doing the simple exercise I suggested.
For others, depending on the complexity of the issue, it may take longer.
>Does the universe just start providing because you said so?
When your clear on your Intent, yes, the “universe provides” – as
long as you do what is required and BE true to who you really are.
In other words, whether the money flows the way your conscious
mind wants, can you be ok with the way that flow is no matter what?
That will tell you your Intent.
Aloha,
Paul
Paul, great post! Thank you for sharing this session with Jeff. I could really sense where you were going, (for a change ;D ) when you brought Jeff to see that what we want to ‘be/do/have’ is truly here and now.
I will be re-reading this and re-listening to audio for reinforcement. I am having this relief giving experience ‘reinstalled’ more frequently when the old tape comes up to scare the Sh*t out of me, and I do four essential breaths, thank the fear, and accept magnanimous feelings HERE and NOW!
This is so great!
Hi Paul,
Thank you for this great insight!
I’ve been pondering those questions for a while now, and you’ve shed a new light on the subject for me. What I have so far is:
if I had money, I would have to be Responsible (lots of different ways), and I have the (fading) belief that I’m not the best at making decisions. It’s fading because I am looking for more evidence of good decisions v. bad – even to the food I eat each day! The more the merrier!
Today I asked myself the question: if I were to choose my pay for this new job, what would it be? I immediately answered: two more zeroes per hr. Two minutes later, I said “HEY! Wait a minute! Why in the world would I choose to GIVE MYSELF only two zeroes???? How about 6 zeroes? Then I’d have the choice of retiring after 1 day or not!!” At 1st I almost felt guilty for leaving the ‘nice people’ that ‘gave’ me the job – but it’s ME that does that, isn’t it??
Hi Paul – thank you so very much for this posting. While I can definitely relate to the money issue, this posting was also a wonderful reminder about some other issues in my life. I’m dealing with a lot of perceived loss around family and friends and have been carrying this around for awhile. Your posting reminded me to pay more attention and care to myself and let whatever needs to come up, come up. To listen to myself on a deeper level. Love, Brooke
~~I have done the acknowledgment and breathing steps, and, wow, so relaxing. A challenge…, and then, relaxing. I am posting the steps into my calendar to continue to chip away at that feeling. And celebrate the noticing of the new identity. New feelings for the newly-acknowledged objective. Abundance.
Thank you for the potent observations you have crystallized, and thank you for the generously heartful sharing.
Gratefully,
Paul,
Thank you for sharing this case at this time.
It’s propitious as I’ve been struggling to understand how my belief system is holding me back. And I do absolutely believe that I am the source of my own manifestations, consciously or otherwise.
The most surprising thing to learn is that once I’ve connected with my feelings on a deep level and have agreed to shed false beliefs, the rest takes care of itself. (Our vibrations must shift and thus become sync’d to a new complement in the universe.)
Putting my meditations together with the exercise you directed helped me release a lot of toxic feelings. But I’m certain that many lifetimes of self-minimizing thinking can’t be expunged in a single meditation. I
think it’s important to accept that the temptation to feel sorry for myself may rise again but resolve to ask: “How does this serve me?”.
Again, thank you for sharing the case. The audio portion was especially helpful – tonality conveys more than words sometimes.
Best,
Rich.
Paul,
Thank you so much. The money arguing and anger is what I experienced with my parents. So I had a block that money would bring so much anger and fighting I wanted nothing to do with it. Now I know it wasn’t about the money. I went so far as not to expect anything or money because of what was attached to it. What an awesome awakening. I am now free. You really have a special gift to share.
Blessings, Kathy
Hi Paul,
Thank you so much for this entry. I had a major shift when I read this. It didn’t have to do with money, but in my not wanting to be alone. I realized that I was subconsciously manifesting being alone because if I was alone I could not be rejected or abandoned. I feel completely free of this issue now. I even received a few emails today from a dating website from women who want to meet me!
Paul, I recognized my belief patterns stemed from when I was fostered out as a child. I was taken in “just for the money” and then abused, which sent me off to another family who did the same…etc, etc family after family. It has taken my whole life to turn learn the value of “self”. It’s still difficult when you meet someone, the first thing they ask you is “what do You do”? In fact they are asking how valuable are you according the the job/ammount of $ you make.
When I step out my front door, I now just say I am growing & learning. That stops them in their tracks. Your article has brought to mind the nature of societies outlook towards ones VALUE based on the dollar. It would be heaven if we all took into account that the dollar is not what makes the world turn, but what does is LOVE. Love of self and respectfully of each human being.
My intent is to continue living a “rich” life based on the truth of who I AM.
Kindly yours
KC
Hi Paul, I took two of your courses-Secrets of Manifesting and Infinite Abundance. I think it’s a great idea to start this new course “Money Matrix.” Especially with thousands of people suffering so much with this economy. Money seems to be one of the main things people are suffering with.
Thanks,
Janet
Hello Paul this was a great insight, it bought to mind for me as a child I took 50 cents from my mothers purse for the missions because the boys and girls were having a competition as to who could have the most money to give. The nun teaching us told my mother about the amount of money I had bought to school, as a result I got into to trouble I lied about where I got it from to start with I got a really big hiding and literally locked in my room isolated all weekend because of it, so I think my issue is about money causes pain and isolation and i have literally hated that nun all my life so forgiveness needs to happen here also.
Paul,
In reading about RAS, I was able to uncover a couple of faulty beliefs I’ve held for many years that have effected my life. These strongholds, what ever you want to call them surfaced as I was reading your comments. One of them had to do with love scene’s I’d see on shown on television as a little girl, and how an older family member would always ‘bash’ the scene and made everyone watching feel unclean. The other one that surfaced, had to do with how I loved playing softball. I knew on the third strike I always felt “safe” when I hit the ball out of bounds. Sort of like how I saw things as being “out-of bounds for me to achieve. I just wanted you to know this, and to tell you thank you very much.
Hello Paul,
Thanks for this post. This does all make perfect sense, I do understand the concept. I’ve been working on ridding myself of limiting beliefs. Jeff had a very specific childhood experience that he recognized, I don’t have a sense of anything that specific to release but I will keep working with your suggestions. Thank you.
Susan.
In listening to this story and then asking myself the step 1 and 2 question , a flood of emotions arose up in me, almost uncontrollably, like floodgates. I breathed into that feeling. Is there anything else i can be doing.Even though these emotions came through I haven’t pin pointed a specific.
@Pat –
I asked myself one day, “What do I need to know about my negative money issues… what is the key?” As I was meditating I saw a huge reservoir filled with my money worries, including tension, stress, conflict and all my negative core beliefs. This massive body of water was being held back by a giant dam and the pressure was intense. I knew I needed to open the flood gates… so I went down into the workings of the dam and saw three big cranks that I proceeded to turn. As I watched the gates open, slowly releasing the pressure, I just knew that wasn’t going to cut it. So I immediately wired the whole dam and watched myself push down vehemently on the dynamite plunger and the whole dam BLEW UP!!! It was GONE! There was just a little trickle of water gently flowing through the valley. It was a stunning experience. I actually laughed with tears in my eyes. The very next day I got a call, out of the (so-called) blue, to paint a large mural. I’ve gotten three other jobs on the heels of that one… and if I ever see the dam begin to re-build itself, I immediately blow it up again! Now, if letting go of (i.e. blowing up) these money issues means I win Power Ball Jackpot, hurray for me.
Sincerely, Melanie
